Director and Professor Head of the Department Faculty of Fine Arts, Dhaka University Born : 1947 Bogura, Bangladesh Education : 1970 : BFA from the College of Arts & Crafts, Dhaka, Bangladesh. 1974 : Studied painting at the Department of Fine Arts, University of Chittagong. Abdus Shakoor Shah was born in Bogura, Bangladesh, in 1947. During his formative years he worked under the guidance of the distinguished artist Rashid Choudhury at the University of Chittagong. Later while studying in Baroda, India, the revivalist ideas of K G Subramanyan influenced him deeply. Shah’s current style of using folk art in a succinct post-modern backdrop is inspired by the works of Jamini Roy, Quamrul Hassan, the Gujrati Jain miniatures and pata paintings of Bengal. Notable among Shah’s awards are the Lalitkala Academy Best Prize (1977); the Excellence Award, Tokyo (1991); Diploma Uczestnictwa, Poland (1993); Honourable Mention Award in the 13th National Art Exhibition, Dhaka (1998), Tokyo ACCU competition runner up prize (1998, 2000); Gold Medal in the 15th National Art Exhibition, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (2002); UNESCO and Civitella Ranieri Foundation Fellowship, Umbria, Italy (2006) and S M Sultan Padak (2008). Abdus Shakoor Shah is a retired professor of the Faculty of Fine Art, University of Dhaka.
